Can SLP assistants answer questions about the IEP during an ARD meeting?

In Texas, Speech-Language Pathology assistants are not authorized to participate in discussions regarding the Individualized Education Program (IEP) during Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings. The role of the SLP assistant is to support the SLP in delivering services but does not extend to making decisions or providing input on student IEPs.

The reason behind this limitation is to ensure that all information and recommendations related to a student's educational plan come from qualified professionals who have the appropriate credentials and training to understand and evaluate the student's needs fully. The process of developing or modifying an IEP involves a critical review of data, behavioral assessments, and therapeutic approaches, which require a licensed and qualified speech-language pathologist's expertise.

While SLP assistants bring valuable support to the therapy process and can share their observations regarding the implementation of strategies or interventions, they do not have the authority to answer questions about the IEP or influence decisions made in an ARD meeting.
